Neighbors,

We have finished the feasibility study phase of the Belle Isle channel restoration project. Chuck Nahn (with the help of some neighbors) completed the work over the winter and spring and will be presenting the results to the Public Works Committee on 7/12 and to the entire City Council on 7/17. In addition, the PWC and council will be reviewing and voting on a resolution to help us take the next step with this project. The resolution is asking the council to approve the following:

  1. Apply for a chapter 30 permit from the DNR (dredging permit)
  2. Apply for grant money to help fund the project (RBF grant, Fish America grant etc.)
  3. Complete a detailed design of the dredging work to be completed

With the timely completion of these next steps, we will still be on track to complete the dredging in the fall of 2007.

A showing of public support for this project will continue to be our best way of keeping the city moving forward on this project and we need your help. Please attend the Public Works Committee meeting at 6:30pm on 7/12 at City Hall and the City Council meeting at 7:30pm on 7/17 at the library. If you can only attend one of these meetings, please make it the council meeting on 7/17. At each of these meetings, I would ask that you give a brief statement that you are in favor of this project and would like the council to approve the resolution that I mentioned above. If you would rather not speak, you can register at the beginning of the meeting that you are in favor of this resolution, which is just as effective, so please attend. Please talk with your neighbors about these meetings and encourage them to attend as well.

In addition, I would ask that each of you send a quick email to the council and the mayor to let them know of your support for this project. You need to simply reference the Belle Isle channel restoration or dredging project and indicate your desire to have the council take these next steps.

Below are the email addresses for the council members. Please copy me on your notes to the council and also let me know of your commitment to attend the upcoming meetings. I want to track this to ensure we have enough people at the meetings.

As always let me know what questions you have.

Thank you.
