Here Comes The Flood....

flood

First, a thank you to all of the folks who came out and bagged, brought food or beverage, drove a front-end loader, hauled heavy sand bags, took time off of work....the list of tasks that were completed and help that was received is endless!  The board is meeting to go over what was done right, what we need to change for next time and tighten up our plans and who is in charge of what so things go even smoother the next time the waters start to rise.  Considering the record amounts of water we have received, we think everyone did a great job of staying on top of things and helping each other out.  One of the topics that are a main concern of the Board is the potential for a shoreline development plan. This may include informative guidelines on how to make better berms to referrals for professional assessments. So keep an eye out for information coming soon!  We want to keep improving our safety regarding the water levels while hopefully reducing the amount of emergency bagging needed.

THANKS FOR THE HELP…..

There are so many people to thank, and we hope we have not left anyone out who deserves recognition.  We especially wanted to thank the local businesses who provided food, drink and other items/equipment.  Show your thanks the next time you make a purchase by calling on them!  Ken’s Meat and Deli, Glass Nickel Pizza Co., Culvers, Sentry Foods, Olson Construction and G&B Construction. Thanks also go out to the Red Cross, the Monona Grove Soccer Team, the Prisoner Work Release team and their supervisors, and of course, the City of Monona.  Also, a special thanks to the Smecko family who came and helped us for an entire weekend when the city workers and prisoners were not available.  There is truly no way to thank everyone by name, so let me just say thank you to all our neighbors, friends, city employees and businesses for all of their help!

FUTURE GOALS

We have so many plans, there isn't enough room to address them all in detail in the first newsletter! Just to give you an idea of what we are working on , here are a few of the items we discussed at the Board’s first meeting:

·                 The BINA Residents Committee: We are looking to get a map of the official BINA area, addresses and names of our resident and create a member list. Mike Brunet is also researching the potential location for a neighborhood sign, perhaps on Winnequah Rd at the end of the channel (near the overflow parking lot for the ball diamond)  This will help us get to know all of our neighbors and keep everyone informed on what BINA is working on and looking to improve so everyone has input.  This committee will also be able to welcome new neighbors and let them know about what this great neighborhood has to offer!

·                 The Park Planning Committee:  A continued effort to make Oneida park a great place for kids, and maybe even the neighborhood dogs! Park equipment has been ordered, and will be installed in mid-October. A Spring Grand Opening Ceremony will be held once the other, larger pieces of park equipment are installed (pending the approval of 2008 City funds for Oneida Park).  A number of residents will be attending the City Council meeting with Tammy O’Brien and Cynthia Everhart to show support for Oneida Park and to encourage the Council to approve the recommended $20K for 2008.

·                 Tee-Shirt Fundraiser: The tee-shirts are being printed, thanks to Rebecca Glassel and Championship Awards! Megan Nicholson created a logo for BINA that was unveiled at the picnic and advanced orders were taken for shirts and hats. Rebecca should receive the shirts within the next week and begin notification of when and where items can be picked up. If you are interested in ordering items that will support BINA, please contact Rebecca at june_bug108@sbcglobal.net or 223-0873. We hope to have a list of even more items available soon!

·                 The Newsletter and Web Committee: An effort to keep everyone informed in the easiest manner possible.  We want you to know what we are working on and find out what you want us to add to our list!

·                 Street Repair plans, Shoreline improvement-Flood mitigation and Channel Dredging:  We plan to make each of these issues a priority in regards to getting information, keeping members informed of progress and continuously finding out what needs to be done and what neighbors want to see done.

·                 Belle Isle history - We are also looking to find out more about how Belle Isle was formed, learn about the history of its residents and just share some stories about our neighborhood.  If you have any information, images or tales please forward them to Megan at timegan@charter.net !

Please let us know what we can do to keep improving the communication amongst neighbors.  While we will try not to overdo the emails and newsletters, we do want to make sure we are getting the necessary information out to people in a timely manner.  We will be improving our newsletter distribution,  enhancing the website and creating both electronic and paper methods of communication so you can get the information in the manner that is easiest for you!  Again, please let any of the board members know how we can continue to improve our neighborhood!

Sincerely,

Megan Nicholson

Secretary, Belle Isle Neighborhood Association

SUGGESTED

"DUES"

In order to cover costs of meeting spaces, printing, events and in the interest of getting funds started for future projects we would like to suggest dues of $20 per household.  Any amount that you can contribute is greatly appreciated and will be held in the Belle Isle Neighborhood Association bank account. Please direct any due submissions or questions to Rebecca Glassel at 1120 Birch Haven Circle or call 223-0873.  Rebecca will be keeping the neighborhood informed of expenses incurred and plans for future needs and costs throughout the year. Again, this is only a suggested amount and is not a requirement of the Belle Isle Neighborhood Association.  This is only a guideline to help those currently covering costs out of their own pocket and for future projects and fun! Any help, monetary or otherwise is appreciated!
